AIS PennHIP testing estimates the possible risk of osteoarthritis of canine hip dysplasia later in life.
Overview
The Antech Imaging Services (AIS) PennHIP testing method is the most effective hip screening tool available for canines. Osteoarthritis can be very painful for dogs, so early detection is important to see if your pet is at risk. All dogs can benefit from PennHIP testing, and with this information, preventive and palliative plans can be recommended.
Determining the Distraction Index (DI) through the PennHIP method is the most reliable indicator of future hip osteoarthritis. By studying multiple factors such as age, breed, weight and gender, it was found that the DI had the highest and most accurate predictive correlation with future osteoarthritis.
When Do I Know When I Should Test My Dog?
AIS PennHIP testing shows accurate results in puppies as young as 16 weeks of age, and is recommended to wait until that age to perform the test. There is an encouraged follow-up radiography at 6 months or 1 year, although that decision is left to the owner.
